Entering the tournament, League VI boasted county ranked wrestlers in 12 of the 15 weight classes for a total of 19 ranked wrestlers, which is over 20 percent of the ranked wrestlers in the entire county. It is arguably the toughest league in New York State. When all was said and done, WHB finished the day with 5 all-league wrestlers. Freshman Gavin McIntrye ranked 2nd in the tournament at 99 pounds, posted a 5-1 win in the finals to become the only League VI Champion from WHB. Junior Liam McIntyre, who entered the league tournament undefeated, was actually ranked 2nd in the league to John Glenn's Joe Franzese. Liam lost in the finals 2-0 in the last 10 seconds of the match to place 2nd. It also set up at least one very possible rematch at the County Tournament as the two are arguably two of the top wrestlers in New York State at 182 pounds. Senior Tyler Skala (113), Sophomore Jason Montagna (120), and Senior Lucas Villareale (220) all lost to the eventual League VI Champions in the semi-finals, but all went on to win the consolation match to place 3rd. They will all head to "The Show" this weekend at the Section XI Tournament and we wish all of them success! The Westhampton Beach Hurricanes traveled to William Floyd High School last Saturday to take part in the 33rd annual Kujan Brothers Individual Tournament. Coming of a lopsided League VI week that saw the Hurricanes squash Amityville 69-15 on Tuessday and then in turn being manhandled by League Champion Rocky Point 67-12 on Thursday, the Canes were looking for an outlet for pent up League VI frustrations. The Kujan Tournament turned out to be just what the Canes needed! WHB had 3 champions and 13 total podium finishes as well as finishing 3rd as a team in a very close battle. The Hurricanes have some very tough young team members. This was no more obvious than in the 99 pound weight class where WHB finished with 1st, 3rd and 6th place!

99 - Freshman Gavin McIntyre had such an outstanding tournament, that he was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler AND the Toughest Competitor!
113 - Senior Tyler Skala got his 100th win as a Hurricane on his way to the title! He becomes the 8th wrestler to join the club!
182 - Junior Liam McIntyre had the most pins in the least amount of time while claiming his title!

Westhampton Beach had a very tough week leading up to Christmas. Although it started off on the right foot as the Canes defeated Sayville at home in a League VI meet on 12/20 to even their league record at 1-1, it was all downhill after that. WHB dropped a League VI dual meet at Islip on 12/22 and then were beaten at Connequot the next day (12/23) before their short Christmas break. Wasting very little time, the Hurricanes were back in action at the Sal Difazio Individual Tournament at Half Hollow Hills East on 12/28-12/29. WHB wrestled hard and ended up with 4 finalists but ultimately 2 champions. Comparing that to Half Hollow Hills West with 4 Champions, one would expect a decent team score for WHB, but not first place. Well the Hurricanes surprised everyone, including Coach Bass with the final team score showing the Canes edging second place Commack by a 254-233.5 margin in the 12 team field. It was all about the wrestle-back performances for the Hurricanes. The most obvious example was Junior Ryan Darbyshire who lost his first match but won every wrestle-back to place 3rd in the event. This was the type of effort given by the team overall. The Hurricanes finished with 2 Champions, 2-2nd places, 4-3rd places, 2-4th places, and 1-6th place for a total of 11 placewinners. It was a great team effort and the Canes can use this momentum heading into a week with 2 League VI matches and the Cory Hubbard Duals next Saturday! Congratulations to the team on a great tournament!

The match started at 99 pounds and WHB took the lead (3-0) with a 6-1 decision by Freshman Gavin McIntyre. That would be the last time the Hurricanes would lead. The match was tied tied at 12-12 after a pin by Sophomore Jason Montagna at 126, but the Canes dropped the next 4 matches (132, 138, 145 & 152) and found themselves staring at an insurmountable 36-18 deficit. Juniors Hunter Burling and Liam McIntyre both added pins at 182 & 195 late to bring the Canes to within 6 points at 36-30. However, with no heavyweight, the match was over with Miller Place taking the 45-30 victory. The Hurricanes will continue their efforts to improve and are back on the mats next Wednesday at home in another League VI match against Sayville. Come out and support the team!

The Canes broke even on the day with a 2-2 dual meet record which left them in 3rd place of the 5 team field. The Hurricanes were not at full strength and a bit rusty. Nothing too unusual for early December. WHB met up with Riverhead in the 9am time slot and came away with a 49-34 victory. After a bye at 11am the Canes then faced off against Smithtown West. Ranked #3 in Section Xi, the Bulls are extremely strong and talented. The Canes were not able to keep pace and dropped the match 50-27. Host William Floyd was the opponent at 3pm and WHB got back on the winning track with a convincing 53-22 victory. That setup the 5pm match with Division II powerhouse Mattituck, Featuring 8 county ranked wrestlers in Division II, Mattituck was too much for the Hurricanes this day posting a 59-24 victory over the Canes. WHB got a lot of mat time, showed some new faces on the varsity mats. Additionally, most of the JV wrestlers were able to get matches either through exhibition or via the small JV tournament that was hosted in the wrestling room. While I'm sure there is always plenty to improve upon, it was a good start to the season! The Canes travel to Easthampton this Saturday 12/9 for the Sprig Gardner Tournament!

Post 5350 hosted a "Turkey Trot". Funds raised from the event go towards multiple charitable activities sponsored by the VFW each year. Approximately 35 members of the wrestling family turned out for the event and enjoyed each others company as well as the nice weather! Go Canes!

]]><![CDATA[2017-18 Season kicks off with annual family dinner]]>Wed, 15 Nov 2017 05:00:00 GMThttp://whb-wrestling.com/previous-articles/2017-18-season-kicks-off-with-annual-family-dinnerThe 2017-18 Hurricane Wrestling family met last Sunday evening (11/12) in the WHB High School cafeteria to kick off the new season. Parents and wrestlers met for sit down chicken dinner provided by one of our favorite places in Westhampton Beach, The Hurricane Deli. Owner Joe Grady and his team always go out of their way to support the team, coming in at ridiculous hours to make sure the team gets breakfast before tournaments and dual meets. The Canes are grateful for that support.
Before and after the meal, there was much to accomplish. Uniform and clothing orders were addressed. Coach Bass introduced his staff and discussed coaching philosophy. The availability of various volunteer positions for parents was discussed as well as an introduction of current volunteers and their duties. It is a great deal of important information that needs to be discussed as well as the first opportunity for some of the team parents to meet. It was a great family event and the right way to start the season. The wrestlers kicked off their 2017-18 season with their first practice the next day. 7 Hurricane wrestlers accompanied Coach Bass and Coach Mitchell to Hofstra University yesterday to participate in a wrestling clinic (see flyer below). This was no ordinary clinic. In addition to members of the Hofstra wrestling team, also on hand was Ohio State Head Wrestling Coach Tom Ryan, 2-time National Coach of the Year, and Kyle Snyder. Kyle is a senior at Ohio State University, a 2-time NCAA Champion, World Freestyle Champion, and an Olympic Champion. At age 21, Kyle is the youngest wrestler to become a World Champion in US history. He is also the youngest wrestler to ever win the NCAA, World, and Olympic Championships in the same year. It was a very special day for all who attended and some inspirational words that Kyle wrote on a team poster will be framed and put up in the wrestling room.

The Canes made their annual pilgrimage to Kutztown University to attend the TNT camp held there. It's really the first team building opportunity for the members of the 2017-18 squad and a great opportunity to get some quality mat time. The Canes broke up into three smaller teams for the camp (Pictured below). The team will be hitting the weightroom and getting ready for the upcoming season that will kick off with the annual parents meeting and dinner in November. Go Hurricanes!
