Junior Liam McIntyre fresh off his county championship, headed to Albany to compete against the best of New York State in the 182 pound bracket. The tournament rankings had Liam as a number 6 seed, directly behind #5 Joe Franzese from John Glen, who Liam beaten to win his county title. Liam led off the tournament by defeating Senior Kevin Barry from Stepinac 13-0 to move into the quarter-finals. He next faced #3 Junior Sammy Deprez from Hilton but was unable to advance dropping a 3-1 decision to the eventual 3rd place finisher. Now relegated to the consolation bracket, Liam needed 2 wins to become an all-state wrestler and get onto the podium. Liam made quick work of Senior Steven Daskavitz, pinning him in 50 seconds. That set up a blood round match with #7 seed Senior Jame Langan from Wantaugh. Liam again made the seeding look prophetic with a 7-0 victory, earning him a spot on the podium. Next he had to face #4 seed Senior Jake Cook from Ballston Spa hoping to move ahead into the 3rd place final. It was just not to be as Liam fell by a 7-5 final score setting up a rubber match against #5 Senior Joe Franzese from John Glenn. Franzese won the League VI title beating Liam 2-0, and a week later, Liam beat Franzese 5-0 to capture the Section XI title. In the third meeting, Franzese got the upper hand and prevailed by a final 8-3 margin which left Liam in 6th place for the tournament. The 182 pound seeds 1-6 finished in exactly that order. It was a fantastic season for Liam and he's only a Junior! It was the 6th time that a Hurricane wrestler has stepped onto the state podium and we can only hope he can become only the 2nd to do it twice next year! Congratulations Liam McIntyre!
