Sophomore Jason Montagna (120) wrestling against some extremely tough competition, dropped an 11-7 decision to a West Virginia wrestler and then was defeated 15-8 by an opponent from Pennsylvania. Jason, only a Sophomore showed that he can wrestle with anyone in the country.
Junior Liam McIntyre just off a 6th place finish at the New York State tournament entered the 182 pound bracket unseeded among 73 wrestlers. The weight class included the following:
21 - 1-time all-state wrestlers
12 - 2-time all-state wrestlers
6 - 3-time all-state wrestlers
2 - 1-time state champions
6 - 2-time state champions
2 - 3-time state champions
To summarize that, - 39 all-state wrestlers and 10 state champions in a bracket of 73.
Liam won his first three matches of the tournament on Friday, defeating Cody Goding from California 3-0, Connor Bourne from Nevada 7-4 and then reached the quarter-finals by ending the day with a 7-2 victory over 4th seeded Santonio Morina from New Jersey. On Saturday, Liam dropped a very tough 11-9 decision to 5th seeded Shane Noonan from Pennsylvania which put him into the "blood round" of the wrestle-backs. Unfazed, Liam defeated Jose Valdez from Florida 4-0 which assured him of a podium finish. Liam then faced the #2 seed in the form of Zane Lanham from West Virginia and moved on with an incredible 4-2 victory. He then needed a victory to advance into the consolation finals and did just that with a 7-2 victory over 7th seeded Damen Moyer from Pennsylvania. Liam closed out his amazing run losing in the final match 13-6 at the hands of 3rd seeded Jonothan Fagen from Idaho. The 6-2 record earned Liam a 4th place podium finish and the title of all-american! It was truly an amazing run and a historic event for the WHB wrestling family! Congratulation to both Liam and Jason for the time and effort required to participate on the national stage!
