Canes sweep PSAL teams and captures 2nd in Bryant Winter Dual Classic to open season! McIntyre named tournament most outstanding wrestler!!!

The Westhampton Beach Hurricane wrestling team sporting 10 first-time starters (out of 15 weight classes) hit land at William Cullen Bryant High School in Queens early staurday morning. The Canes defeated Monsignor Farrell (Staten Island) 75-12, host Bryant 60-21, and Tottenville (Staten Island) 37-33 before running into Section VIII (Nassau County) powerhouse Massapequa. Currently ranked #2 in Section VIII and #4 in New York State, Massapequa defeated the Hurricanes by a score of 52-27. With some confidence and a 3-1 start, the Hurricanes returned Sunday and picked up where they left off. The Canes dispatched Petrides (Staten Island) 65-18, Massapequa's Varsity B team 49-33, and finally New Castle (Oklahoma) by a 42-24 margin to take home the 2nd place cup. In the wake of the Hurricanes was the following destruction:

#1, #4, #5, & #10 teams from New York City (PSAL) as well as a very good team from Oklahoma and the Massapequa B defeated by WHB
9 Wrestlers currently ranked in the top 6 at their weight class were defeated by WHB wrestlers
Tyler Skala (113), Dan Purkis (120), Dane Mendoza (132), & Liam McIntyre (170) all defeated returning state qualifiers from last year

Sophomore Liam McIntyre (170) was namesd the tournament most outstanding wrestler! He went 7-0 in the most difficult weight class in the tournament. During his run, Liam defeated a 2016 NY State Qualifier, a Nassau County place winner, a PSAL finisher, & a district place winner from Oklahoma! Congratulations to Liam and all of the wrestlers!
