WHB's Skala, McIntyre, Rementer are Champions at Sprig Gardner Tournament!!

By Cailin RileyThe Westhampton Beach wrestling team held its own with an elite group of squads that made the trek to East Hampton High School on Saturday to compete in its annual Sprig Gardner Wrestling Tournament.

The Hurricanes (207 points) finished among the top four along with Sachem North (255), Ward Melville (249) and Longwood (228). Bayport/Blue Point was fifth with 117.5 points, followed by Riverhead (113.5), Southampton (38) and East Hampton (33).

Westhampton Beach finished with 18 place-winners (top six finishes) including three champions. Tyler Skala won the 113 pound weight class in a 6-1 decision; Liam McIntyre was champion at 160 with a 14-3 win; and Scott Rementer was champion at 170 after a 7-4 decision.

McIntyre had two pins on the day, Skala had two technical falls, and Rementer had a pin in the semifinals.

Three other Hurricane wrestlers made the finals, finishing second: Danny Purkis (120), Dane Mendoza (126), and David Cable (138). Mendoza lost a tough 3-2 match with a last-second takedown by his opponent, Kenny Cracchiola of Ward Melville, who was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. The weight class was loaded, with three All-County wrestlers (including Mendoza), and two All-League wrestlers from last year.

Taking third for Westhampton Beach was Gavin McIntyre (99) and Jason Montagna (106). Ryan Wagner (220) and Jack Ciolino (132) were fourth; Thatcher Cord (160) and Gage Rubio (152) were fifth; and Cole Hempel (106), Sebastian Gomez (113), Ryan Darbyshire (120), Jackson Hulse (126), Cole Henke (138) and Jeremy Endara (285) finished sixth.

The Hurricanes ware scheduled to open the League VI season by hosting a talented John Glenn team on Wednesday, December 14, and will be back in action the following day with another league match, at Shoreham/Wading River, at 4 p.m.

Hurricanes Wrestling Once Again In Mix For League Title

As many as five teams have a legitimate chance to win the League VI wrestling title this year, and as usual, Westhampton Beach is in the mix.

The Hurricanes will debut 10 new starters this season and lost a county champion—Dan McClure—to graduation, but bring back four wrestlers who were All-League or All-County last year, a strong group of seniors, and plenty of talented underclassmen ready to step up.

Senior Dane Mendoza (126 or 132 pounds) is a returning two-time All-County wrestler, while sophomore Liam McIntyre (160/170) finished second in the league at 145 pounds last year and was one match away from All-County status. Senior Scott Rementer (170/182) was second in the league in his weight class last year as well, and junior Tyler Skala (113 pounds) was also All-League last year, taking fourth at 99 pounds.

Five other seniors should be important to Westhampton Beach’s success this year, including varsity returnees Dan Purkis (120), David Cable (132/138), Jeremy Endara (220/285), and James D’Augistino (145), who didn’t wrestle last year but was on the team as a sophomore. Senior Ryan Wager is trying out wrestling for the first time, and will compete at 220 pounds, coming off a successful season with the Hurricanes football team where he was a key player.

Westhampton Beach has depth and talent at the lower weights, with eighth-grader Gavin McIntyre, sophomores Jake Kass and Cole Hempel, and freshman Jay Montagna all looking like strong options at 99 and 106 pounds. Mendoza is the headliner at the 126/132-pound range, but eighth-grader Jackson Hulse, sophomore Ryan Darbyshire and junior Brandon White are in the mix at those weights as well. Junior Jack Ciolino should see time at 138 pounds, along with Cable, while junior Thatcher Cord and freshman Gage Rubio will handle duties at 152 pounds. Senior newcomer Austin Mahon will fill in at 182, and junior Lucas Villarealle will give Westhampton Beach another strong option at 195/220. He wrestled as a freshman and did not wrestle last year before returning to the team this year.

Longtime head coach Paul Bass said the battle for the league’s regular season title could go to almost anyone, with his team, John Glenn, Islip, Miller Place and Shoreham/Wading River all fielding talented teams this year. He added that Amityville is a much improved team and could catch some squads by surprise as well. Sayville and East Hampton round out the league.

Westhampton Beach started the season by competing in a two-day dual meet tournament in Queens, going 6-1, beating four New York City-area teams ranked in the top 10 in the PSAL, getting a win over a team from Oklahoma, and beating one of the stronger teams in Nassau County. Both Liam McIntyre and Mendoza were undefeated at 7-0 over the course of the tournament, including wins over wrestlers who were state tournament qualifiers last season, and McIntyre was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. The Hurricanes beat nine wrestlers who are currently ranked in the top six in their weight class, in either the PSAL or Nassau, including four state qualifiers from last year. McIntyre, Mendoza, Skala and Purkis pulled off those wins.

Hurricane warning in New York City!

Canes sweep PSAL teams and captures 2nd in Bryant Winter Dual Classic to open season! McIntyre named tournament most outstanding wrestler!!!

The Westhampton Beach Hurricane wrestling team sporting 10 first-time starters (out of 15 weight classes) hit land at William Cullen Bryant High School in Queens early staurday morning. The Canes defeated Monsignor Farrell (Staten Island) 75-12, host Bryant 60-21, and Tottenville (Staten Island) 37-33 before running into Section VIII (Nassau County) powerhouse Massapequa. Currently ranked #2 in Section VIII and #4 in New York State, Massapequa defeated the Hurricanes by a score of 52-27. With some confidence and a 3-1 start, the Hurricanes returned Sunday and picked up where they left off. The Canes dispatched Petrides (Staten Island) 65-18, Massapequa's Varsity B team 49-33, and finally New Castle (Oklahoma) by a 42-24 margin to take home the 2nd place cup. In the wake of the Hurricanes was the following destruction:

#1, #4, #5, & #10 teams from New York City (PSAL) as well as a very good team from Oklahoma and the Massapequa B defeated by WHB
9 Wrestlers currently ranked in the top 6 at their weight class were defeated by WHB wrestlers
Tyler Skala (113), Dan Purkis (120), Dane Mendoza (132), & Liam McIntyre (170) all defeated returning state qualifiers from last year

Sophomore Liam McIntyre (170) was namesd the tournament most outstanding wrestler! He went 7-0 in the most difficult weight class in the tournament. During his run, Liam defeated a 2016 NY State Qualifier, a Nassau County place winner, a PSAL finisher, & a district place winner from Oklahoma! Congratulations to Liam and all of the wrestlers!

That's the kind of wreckage we like to see after a Hurricane!!

Canes head to Queens for the Bryant Winter Dual Classic!

On Saturday and Sunday December 3rd-4th, the Bryant Winter Dual Classic will take place at W.C. Bryant High School in Queens. Wrestlers will be coming from as far as Oklahoma to take part in this exciting event.The tournament will be broadcast on NFHS Network. Matches begin at 9:00 AM both days, with J.V. competitions taking place between Varsity matches.
“We wanted to start the year with the highest level of competition to see where we stand with New York State’s best,” said Bryant Athletic Director/Assistant Coach Peter Cardone. After all, he points out, wrestlers improve by facing tougher competition. Cardone will be working with Bryant Head Coach Joe Goetz, Assistant Coach Joseph Weinstein, and Assistant Coach Raheem Williams.
This tournament will consist of varsity round robin duals and Junior Varsity individual matches, helping to develop the J.V. wrestlers with this unique opportunity.
Teams slated to attend the competition include Massapequa 1, Massapequa 2, Monsignor Farrell, Westhampton Beach, Bryant, Petrides, Tottenville, and the Newcastle team from Oklahoma.
