Canes come up short against Miller Place in League VI opener

The Westhampton Beach Hurricanes took to the road to face-off against reigning League VI champion Miller Place in their first league dual meet of the season yesterday. The match started at 99 pounds and WHB took the lead (3-0) with a 6-1 decision by Freshman Gavin McIntyre. That would be the last time the Hurricanes would lead. The match was tied tied at 12-12 after a pin by Sophomore Jason Montagna at 126, but the Canes dropped the next 4 matches (132, 138, 145 & 152) and found themselves staring at an insurmountable 36-18 deficit. Juniors Hunter Burling and Liam McIntyre both added pins at 182 & 195 late to bring the Canes to within 6 points at 36-30. However, with no heavyweight, the match was over with Miller Place taking the 45-30 victory. The Hurricanes will continue their efforts to improve and are back on the mats next Wednesday at home in another League VI match against Sayville. Come out and support the team!
